European
Ombudsmen debate immigrants' rights in Barcelona |

With the
title "Europe: an open society", ombudsmen from a range of
countries, regions and municipalities of Europe met on October 4-5
in Barcelona to discuss ombudsmen's work regarding the rights of
immigrants residing on the European continent. European ombudsmen
met in Barcelona to hold the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI)
European Conference's General Assembly. Catalan Ombudsman Rafael
Ribó is director of the European region of the IOI.

Spanish
ombudsmen seek more supervision over markets |
|
The
request addressed to public authorities is included in the
conclusions of the 25th Spanish Ombudsmen Coordination Seminar, held
September 27-29 in La Rioja, under the title, "The impact of the
financial crisis on the exercise of persons' rights. The ombudsmen
believe that in addition to supervision, "a decided regulation
effort" by public authorities must serve to guarantee the rights of
persons and promote the principles of the social state.

The
Catalan Ombudsman's office will travel to Rubí next Thursday,
October 14th to field complaints and queries on public
administrations, and also companies that provide services of public
interest (utilities and telephony). Visits will be received at the
Martí Tauler Library, at Aribau, 5. Appointments can be made at 900

The
Catalan Ombudsman investigates the elimination of school field trips
and summer camps |

The
Catalan Ombudsman has addressed the Department of Education to
verify the number of schools in this predicament, an assessment of
compliance with the laws in force to guarantee the rights of
students affected and the measures planned by the Department to
resolve the situation. The Ombudsman has also requested that the
Department assess the situation of inequality among the students of
various schools as regards their participation in this sort of
activities, and if there are any plans to ensure equal access.

Vendrell, new Director of Consumer and Territorial Affairs of the
Catalan Ombudsman's Office |

He will be
responsible for the areas of environment, consumer affairs, taxes,
town planning and housing, and labor and pensions. Mr Vendrell
(Barcelona, 1949) studied Business Administration and Management at
the Institute of Higher Business Studies (IESE), in addition to
Theology and Philosophy. He worked in the publishing industry for 12
years (1983-1995). He was also Executive Director of Parliamentary
Relations (1996-1999). Mr Vendrell served as a deputy to the
Parliament of Catalonia for three legislatures between 1999 and
2010.

The
individualized service agreement leads to doubling of Catalan
Ombudsman interventions in San Sadurní d'Anoia |

The
presentation of the Report to the Plenary Session of the Local
Council by Jordi Sànchez, general deputy Ombudsman, mention was made
of the fact that the first complete year of individualized attention
led to a doubling of interventions, rising from 81 (23 complaints,
38 queries) in 2008 to 121 (30 complaints and 91 queries) in 2009.
The agreement, signed by the Local Council and Catalan Ombudsman on
December 4, 2008 calls for the preparation of a monographic report,
maximum swiftness in the processing of complaints, and regular trips
by members of the Ombudsman's staff to Sant Sadurní to receive
complaints and queries.
