Parliament appoints members of the Catalan Ombudsman's Advisors Council for Prevention of Torture

With the election of 12 council members, the Catalan Parliament moves forward with the implementation of this supervision mechanism, described in the Catalan Ombudsman Act of December 2009. The Council's mission is to aid the Ombudsman in the exercise of his duties as Catalan Authority for the Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment.

Proposal for fast-track prosecution of squatters

The Catalan Ombudsman has addressed Catalan parliamentary groups to ask that they consider proposing in Spanish parliament a legislative modification to reduce the time in which squatters illegally occupy residential building units. Within criminal law, illegal occupation of housing is classified as breaking and entering, and encroachment, and in most cases, meets the criteria for fast-track prosecution.

The Catalan Ombudsman in Salou. Visits to be received, and a presentation on the 2009 Report to Parliament to be given on September 16

The Catalan Ombudsman's staff will take visits from 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 to 6:30 pm in the Civic Center, carrer de l'Advocat Gallego 2. Rafael Ribó will offer a presentation on the content of the 2009 Report to Parliament in the Costa Daurada Room of the same Civic Center facility. Coordination Seminar with Ombudsmen from the rest of Spain

Catalan Ombudsman Rafael Ribó, and other members of his staff will take part this September 27, 28 and 29 in the 25th Coordination Seminar for Spanish Ombudsmen, to be held in La Rioja. The theme of this year's seminar is "The Impact of the Economic Crisis on the Exercise of Persons' Rights.".
