The Catalan Ombudsman will continue working on the prevention of torture in Catalonia

In spite of the recent ruling of the Spanish Constitutional Court that suppresses the competence of the Catalan Ombudsman as the Catalan Authority for the Prevention of Torture, Rafael Ribó has assured that the institution will continue acting as such with a different denomination - Catalan Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture. Ribó has also warned that this ruling leads to a political model that is opposite to that of a democratic and plural State.

Recommendation to discuss in Parliament and to regulate the use of taser guns

The Catalan Ombudsman has initiated an ex-officio action following the announcement of the use in the near future of taser guns by the Catalan Police (Mossos d'Esquadra) and the local police. According to the Catalan Ombudsman, the Parliament should undertake initiatives, such as the discussions previously held about the use of rubber bullets, in order to regulate the use of these weapons. He also recommended taking into account the position of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture of the Council of Europe, which considered taser guns use to be very controversial.

The Ombudsman undertakes to take before the Catalan Parliament the problem of unemployment of people over 45 years

Rafael Ribó, on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the conference "How to fight unemployment of people over 45 years?", has undertaken to collect in an extraordinary report the discussions and proposals within the framework of the talks, and to deliver it afterwards to the Parliament. The conference, which took place on March 19 and 20 at the Palau Macaya in Barcelona, has been organized by the Catalan Ombudsman together with "La Caixa" Foundation.

Investigation regarding anti-Catalan messages on Twitter following the plane crash

The Catalan Ombudsman addressed the public prosecutor of the High Court of Catalonia regarding the anti-Catalan messages posted on Twitter in order that suitable measures be taken.

Rafael Ribó, who condemned the messages against crash victims, said that "regardless the cruelty of the tweets, the messages may constitute a hate crime".
