Catalan Ombudsman, Rafael Ribó, has been appointed President of the Board of Directors of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) after having being re-elected as a Director of the Board over the Institute's World Conference held in Stockholm from June 9-12.
Due to this appointment, Barcelona will be holding the headquarters of the IOI European Ombudsman Office.
As a President and Director for the European Region, Ribó is also a full member of IOI worldwide Board of Directors. The other elected members for the IOI Europe are the Ombudsmen of Sweden, Mats Melin; Greece, Yorgos Kaminis and Northern Ireland, Tom Frawley.
During this Board's mandate, in the fall of 2010, IOI's European Conference will be held in Barcelona by the Catalan Ombudsman. During the meeting, which will gather most of European Ombudsmen, it will be addressed the vision of Europe as an open society regarding immigrant's rights and obligations and the Ombudsmen's role as advocates of those rights and obligations.
The International Ombudsman Institute, established in 1978, is a worldwide organization of ombudsman offices. Within its Board of Directors the recognized regions of Africa, Asia, Australia and Pacific, Caribbean and LatinAmerica, North America and Europe are represented.
Promoting the Ombudsman's concept and institution around the world and strengthening the exchange of information and experiences between the ombudsman institutions are IOI's main objectives.
