The Ombudsman was elected by 43 votes in favour and 3 abstentions
The Catalan Ombudsman, Rafael Ribó, has been elected by his European counterparts as president of the European section of the International Ombudsman Institute. Ribó has obtained 43 votes in favour and 3 abstentions of the 46 voting members who have taken part in the vote.
This appointment will lead to the location of the European region IOI headquarters in Barcelona, moving from Warsaw since the Catalan Ombudsman replaces the previous president, the Polish Ombudsman, Irena Lipowicz.
Besides the election of Rafael Ribó, who had already held this position from 2009 to 2012, a new member of the Board of Directors has also been elected, the Ombudsman for the Italian region of Tuscany, Lucina Franchini.
The International Ombudsman Institute was created in 1978 and is an international institution that brings together ombudsmen from around the world. It is organized into six major regions: Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean and North America.
Its main objectives are promoting the concept and the institution of the Ombudsmam worldwide and increasing the exchange of information and experiences among different institutions.
